Awake I Dream in Color (A Poem about Painting)

Anne Bedrick

First

Awake

Overly aware

Doubting

When to add

Where

When to stop

A dialogue of instructions

Then

A color

A shape

A line

Unlocks an entry point

Heart rate

Slowing

Brain

Quieting

I breathe

The long

Slow

Breath of meditation

Unlocking undisclosed rules of intermingling

Nothing predetermined

Responding

Responding

Again responding

To layers accumulated

Spare

And simultaneously full

Finding rightness

In paint flowing

A story hidden

… Emerging

Awake

I dream

In color

In texture

In layers building up

And paring down

In the breathtaking beauty of this

Next to that

Colors consort

Negotiating for space

In joyful disturbances

Tiny passages intuitively connect

Rallying

Smiling

Sighing

Revealing their essence

In winter

Off-season color

That summer celebrates

Fights

Against darkness

Senses

Stamp

Break through

Meander past

And Slip to the side

Layers accumulate

This color

This line

This mark

This texture

Influences structures not easily categorized or articulated

Chaos orders

Into full breaths

An improvisational journey

Beyond

The comprehension

Of the daily self

Awake

I dream

In color

In texture

In layers

Building up

And paring down

Past words
